Bringing Unforgettable Characters to Life

Once upon a time, LAURA STANFILL lived in a New Jersey house filled with music boxes, street organs, and books. She grew up to become the publisher of Forest Avenue Press. Her work has appeared in Shondaland, The Rumpus, The Vincent Brothers Review, Santa Fe Writers Project, and several print anthologies. She believes in indie bookstores and wishes on them like stars from her home in Portland, Oregon, where she resides with her family and a dog named Waffles. Learn more at laurastanfill.com.

Unforgettable characters are key to successful storytelling—regardless of your preferred genre. In this course, we’ll look at how to make the people on the page become real to readers and how to activate them within the context of your plot. We’ll also look at the beauty and power of mistakes—yours as a writer, and your characters’ mess-ups and flounderings.

Laura Stanfill is the publisher of Forest Avenue Press, which she founded in 2012, and the author of Singing Lessons for the Stylish Canary (Lanternfish Press).
